Chesterfield have put Mark Smith in caretaker charge while they search for a replacement for manager Dean Saunders.
Saunders was dismissed on Saturday, hours after the Spireites were beaten 4-0 at home by fellow League One strugglers Swindon Town.
The Welshman lost 11 of his 20 games in charge and left the club with them only four points above the relegation zone in 16th place.
Smith, 55, is the club's academy manager and he will be assisted by goalkeeping coach Mark Crossley and director of player recruitment Paul Mitchell.
He was previously assistant manager to Sam Allardyce at Notts County and worked as either a youth or academy coach with Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Barnsley.
Smith has been with Chesterfield in some capacity since May 2013 and took over as academy manager in June of this year.
His first fixture in charge will come on Saturday when Chesterfield take on Walsall in the second round of the FA Cup at the Proact Stadium.
