Fleetwood headed into Sunday two shots off the pace and briefly topped the leaderboard during the final round, but had to settle for fourth spot as Justin Thomas claimed a play-off victory.

The Race to Dubai champion reached the turn in 33 but lost ground with a three-putt bogey at the 14th and a missed par-save from eight feet at the par-three next, before closing a one-under 69 with a birdie at PGA National's par-five last.

"I feel fine, just disappointed to come up short," Fleetwood said. "I had that little patch in the middle and a couple of putts where I under-read them a little bit.

"For the most part I did a lot right hit and I really enjoyed it. It is great coming down the stretch here and it's the ultimate test of your game along that back nine."

Fleetwood's great week in Florida moved him to a new career high of world No 11 ahead of his return to the WGC-Mexico Championship, where he finished runner-up to Dustin Johnson in 2017.

"I had a great year last year, and then it was just important that we kept on improving, kept on going this year," Fleetwood added. "It has been great.
