Most human beings set certain goals in their everyday lives, whether that's in business, or just personal.

With Elise Christie focused on all things on the ice, the top target for the other 11 Sky Academy Sports Scholars is performing at the Olympics or Paralympics. With a year to go, the pressure is building.

Staying fit, qualifying and simply staying sane for such a monumental event awaiting around the corner is tough. It's the pinnacle of their sport. So how are they coping? What's it like being a Scholar? What are their hopes for the next 12 months?

Scholarships chief Tony Lester says the athletes need to be calm and lucky, while mentor Darren Campbell believes mental strength is crucial. Here's what the Scholars think....

I feel so lucky to be a Sports Scholar. So far it's been an amazing and enjoyable experience. I have dreamed of competing in the Olympics since first walking into a boxing gym and seeing pictures on the wall of past Olympic heroes. It would mean everything to me.

My expectations for the next 12 months are to secure my place on a flight to Rio and to make sure I'm in the best possible form and condition I can be in.

OLIVIA BREEN (PARALYMPIC SPRINTER)

Being a Scholar changed my life. It gave me the ability and confidence to try to become the best athlete I can. This confidence and my hard work has meant my performance has improved. Rio has been my focus since becoming a Scholar.

All the training and competitions are part of my journey towards the 2016 Paralympics. Being at Rio and being on the podium is my inspiration. Qualifying for the IPC Worlds in October is my next target. I hope my performances show how hard I have been working and that I will be rewarded with a medal. It will then be Rio countdown.

QUILLAN ISIDORE (BMX RIDER)

Being a Scholar has been a very memorable, enjoyable and valuable experience. The support we receive has been amazing and it's fantastic to share the journey with 11 other athletes.

Olympics is the big one! Whenever times are hard and my career isn't going very well, thinking about being at a Games drives me to better myself in everything. I truly believe I can make it a successful event. I believe I'm on the verge of really performing next year in perfect timing for the Olympics.

SAVANNAH MARSHALL (BOXER)

I've been a Scholar for three years and I've gained so much from the programme. My confidence in and out of the ring has grown so much. I'm really excited for the Olympics and I can't believe how quick it's come around.

There's a lot of hard work for the next 12 months. I know if I work hard and keep positive I know it will pay off.

LOUIS PERSENT  (400m RUNNER)

My time as a Scholar has been life-changing as it has let me focus on training. I've been frustrated by my injuries but getting the Sky support has kept my mind positive.

The Olympics is the pinnacle of my sport. For the last 16 years I've defined success in terms of making an Olympic team and performing on that stage when it really matters. It should stand as a celebration of what it means to have a goal in life and a desire to push yourself to achieve your potential.

SAM OLDHAM (GYMNAST)

It has been a huge and incredible learning experience as a Scholar. I'm very grateful for all the support and now I'm looking forward to the next year. The Rio Games means everything to me. I've spent the last 15 years preparing myself for this almighty challenge and I'm going to do everything possible to make sure I'm ready when the time comes.

I first need to get myself on the World Championships team for Glasgow. Keeping my body healthy over the next 12 months is vital and hopefully I can improve my routines so that I am in a position to challenge the best in the world by the time Rio approaches.

Three words to describe me: Hungry. Ruthless. Excited.

LUCY GARNER (ROAD CYCLIST)

The amount of support and belief has really helped me through hard times, especially living in Holland. I'm able to fully concentrate on cycling. It's been great to meet athletes experiencing the same things as you.

I have been to the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and grand tours but the Olympics has been a dream of mine since I started cycling. To represent my country would be an honour. I have had a few setbacks this year but I am determined as ever to finish off the season on a high.

I will have a good rest in October and then really concentrate on building my strength and power in the winter.

HOLLY  BRADSHAW (POLE VAULTER)

Sky have been so supportive and have done so much to help me improve as an athlete and person. The Olympics means the world to me! I've dreamed about being at a Games since childhood so to be heading towards a potential second one feels amazing.

London 2012 was sensational and I can't wait for another experience like that! It would mean the world to be representing GB in Rio so I'm going to make sure I do everything in my power to get myself there next year! I am heading to the World Championships soon and my main aims are to jump technically well and make the final.

Anything from then on is a bonus after the year I've had but you never know what can happen when you get yourself in a world final. I will then go on holiday to be refreshed for 2016 which is going to be a massive year for me. We are planning some exciting things ahead of the Olympic year and can't wait for what next year will bring.

MARK ENGLISH (800m RUNNER)

Since joining the Sky Scholars programme in April 2015, the journey has been one of huge positivity. I feel highly supported by a team of professionals who are simply interested in helping me to reach my sporting goals.

The Olympics is the pinnacle of every athlete’s career. I secured the qualifying time in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London in front of 50,000 fans and it was the ideal place to achieve this a year in advance which allows me to plan.

With a year to go, I look forward to competing with the best in the world and to help promote the principles of Olympism and fair play at time when they are being distorted.

I am hoping that my training schedule will go according to plan and that I remain fit and healthy without any major setbacks. In 2016, I expect to compete and be competitive in the World Indoors in Eugene, Oregon and the European Championships next summer before winding down to Rio 2016.

Three words to describe me: Excited. Eager. Fortunate.

I am very happy to be a Sky Sports Scholar and it's been a fantastic experience for me so far! It's enabled me to get the most out of my training and it's been fantastic meeting the other Scholars and learning new skills and gaining self confidence.

The Olympics are so important to me. Witnessing London 2012 has motivated me to try to be a part of Rio. Competing at the Olympics is what I have dreamed of since I started running at 10 so to make it would be a dream come true. My aims are to continue to improve over the next year and try to get my times down over both 800/1500 and have a great winter so I can get it right for the summer next year.

Three words to describe me: Happy. Motivated. Excited.

SIOBHAN-MARIE O'CONNOR (SWIMMER)

After the London Olympics, it wasn’t the best for the British swimming team. Two years on and we've been top of the medals table at the World Championships (in Kazan) which is an amazing feeling. The team has pulled together and done so well. A year out from Rio and it’s a good place to be.

A lot of the guys in the team have said we won’t be taking our feet off the gas. This is just a stepping stone and this was the main focus for this year. We’ve really put a marker down and shown what we can do. We all have things to improve on but we're now really looking forward to getting back in for next year (at the Olympics).
