Brett Favre has performed another retirement U-turn and signed a two-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings.
Quarterback changes mind on retirement...again
Veteran quarterback Brett Favre is coming out of retirement to play for the Minnesota Vikings after all.
Favre, 39, told the Vikings three weeks ago he had decided to remain retired but has now changed his mind and signed a two-year contract.
"I felt I could offer experience and leadership," he said.
"I didn't want to look back and didn't want to say what if."
Terms of the deal were not publically disclosed although it is believed to be worth $25 million.
Favre had announced his retirement at the end of last season after spending a year with the New York Jets following 16 seasons with the Vikings' NFC Norths rivals, the Green Bay Packers.
Plea
His change of heart came when Minnesota head coach Brad Childress phoned on Monday to offer him one last chance.
Favre underwent post-season surgery to repair a torn bicep and it was also discovered he had a slight tear in the rotator cuff of his throwing shoulder.
"We all know there are no guarantees," he added. "But I feel pretty good. Good enough to feel confident I can make the throws I have to make."
It is the second successive year that Favre has changed his mind about retirement.
Before joining the Jets, he also said he was calling it quits after leading the Packers to the play-offs.
Records
Favre holds many NFL records including most career touchdown passes (464), most passing yards (65,127) and most wins by a quarterback (169).
He also owns the mark for most consecutive starts for a quarterback (291, including play-off games).
"The more good tools you can add to the puzzle, the better you are," said Childress.
"His unique knowledge of our system, the NFC North and his innate skills make this a rare opportunity."
