Duretto wins St Simon Stakes at Newbury for Andrew Balding

Andrew Balding's Duretto (20/1) gained a deserved success in the Worthington's OCSL Stakes at Newbury under Graham Lee.

The four-year-old has proved a consistent performer for the Kingsclere House Stables team but hadn't put his head in front since September of last season.

That all changed in the Group Three contest - registered as the St Simon Stakes - as he saw off the late challenge of Mountain Bell to record a half length success. Kings Fete was a further three quarters of a length away in third.

Duretto had finished behind the third in the Cumberland Lodge last time but connections opted to remove his usual hood and the decision paid dividends.

Lee hit the front inside the final furlong aboard the son of Manduro, passing Kings Fete, but the pair had to dig deep as Oisin Murphy conjured up a late run and sustained challenge from the three-year-old filly who was only narrowly denied.

Victory provided Balding with an across the cards big race double following Rosie Briar's Listed win (also at 20/1) at Doncaster.

"Duretto loves to get his toe in, while he also benefited from having a strong gallop to aim," said the winning trainer.

"We decided to leave the hood off today because he is growing up mentally. He has settled well and it might have just given him a bit more at the finish.

"The Blyths have been fantastic owners, who have supported us every year, so I am thrilled for them."
