Andy Murray has withdrawn from next week’s Miami Open with an elbow injury, it has been confirmed.

"Sadly, due to a right elbow injury, I won't be playing in Miami," said Murray. "Apologies to the fans, it's one of my favourite tournaments. The focus now is on getting ready for the clay season."

There is no timescale on the world No 1's recovery period before the clay season which culminates in the French Open.

He was eliminated from Indian Wells earlier this week in his opening match, a shock defeat to world number 129 Vasek Pospisil, and will now miss the follow-up tournament on the opposite coast of America.

Murray's stunning 2016 that saw him overtake Novak Djokovic as the world's best-ranked player has not yet been replicated this year since losing in the last-16 of the Australian Open to Mischa Zverev.
