Money will help look for future stars of the game

LTA president Stuart Smith thinks that the £25million, five-year sponsorship with AEGON is testament to the long-awaited improvement in British tennis. AEGON, the life insurance and pension specialists, have agreed a deal that will see their name emblazed across the Queen's Club Championships, the Eastbourne International and the Edgbaston Classic. The success of Andy Murray, the world No.4 and grand slam finalist, and female junior Wimbledon champion Laura Robson has helped raise the profile of the sport. "I really believe this is an exciting time for British tennis. At the top end of the game we are seeing some signs of success. We have a very long way to go but it is going in the right direction," Smith said. "I think things are getting better and today is a really exciting time for us. This is a sea-change for British tennis."

Smart Investment

It was previously announced that the LTA would be undergoing a 'root and branch' review of the organisations commercial and sponsorship activities. The plan for the money is to invest it across four key strands of the LTA's business programmes - community, competitive, major event and performance. Roger Draper, chief executive of the LTA, believes that the key focus is to use the sponsorship money to continue building the community game and uncover the Murrays of tomorrow. Draper said: "We have to continue to run world-class events as they are part of our commercial operation and we have always said the best way to inspire kids is for them to watch the likes of Rafael Nadal play Novak Djokovic. "We have to be smart in our investments. Our business model is now about investing in the community. "What we are trying to do is make sure we can grow the game, get more people playing the game and create an environment where that talent can emerge. "At the heart of our four-year business plan is growing the game and winning." UK chief executive of AEGON Otto Thoreson added: "British tennis is at a breakthrough stage in its development and it is a very exciting time to be involved in the sport."
