Eddie Hearn has hinted Anthony Joshua will fight for the European title in April instead of taking on Dereck Chisora.

Unbeaten heavyweight Joshua added the British belt to his Commonwealth title by knocking out bitter rival Dillian Whyte at the O2 in London on Saturday night.

Joshua's promoter Hearn is now mulling over plans for the 26-year-old's next fight as he plots a path to a world title shot next year and he told Sky Sports News HQ on Monday that fellow Briton Chisora was "top of the pile of options" for a bout back at the O2 on April 9.

Chisora secured his fourth straight win on the Joshua undercard at the weekend, but it now appears Hearn is looking at other options.

Finland's Robert Helenius, who defeated Chisora on a controversial split decision in 2011, takes on fellow unbeaten fighter Franz Rill from Germany for the vacant European heavyweight crown in Helsinki on Saturday and the winner will be in contention for a clash with Joshua.

Hearn wrote in his column in the Daily Mail: "April 9 will be Anthony Joshua's next outing and again it will be at the O2 - it's his home.

"People are talking about Dereck Chisora, which is ideal if we go down the British title defence route, but I think we might prefer the European title route.

"Robert Helenius is fighting Franz Rill for the title on Saturday and that is a strap we might well go for - AJ wants to go the route of collecting all the titles before and already has British and Commonwealth to his name.

Barry Hearn thinks Anthony Joshua is already the best heavyweight in the world, but doesn't want to see him rushed into a world title shot

"We are also keeping our eye on the IBF route and on top of all that, David Haye remains a huge fight.

"But right now we are prioritising titles and David doesn't bring that to the table at this point. It is, however, one I think will happen down the line. As ever, watch this space."
