Nico Hernandez has secured America's first Olympic boxing medal since 2008.

The light-flyweight is guaranteed a bronze in Rio after progressing to the semi-finals of the 46-49kg event with victory over Ecuador's Carlos Eduardo Quipo Palaxti on Wednesday.

Hernandez, from Wichita, Kansas, lost the first round on all three judges' cards but battled back to win 29-28 across the board.

America has no light-heavy, heavy and super-heavy representatives in Rio. We work out why...

The 20-year-old will take on Uzbekistan's Hasanboy Dusmatov in the semi-finals on Friday but is already confirmed as America's first Olympic boxing medallist since Deontay Wilder won heavyweight bronze in Beijing.

"It feels good knowing that we didn't medal the last Olympics," he said.

"It gives me and my team a lot of motivation. We've all been together since we were younger on the youth team and the junior team so at practice we will push each other and we're real competitive at practice, too.
