Dave Coldwell has quickly shut down Kid Galahad's hopes of getting a crack at Gavin McDonnell.

Galahad's trainer Dominic Ingle had told Sky Sports about their ambition to box either of the McDonnell twins, but their coach Coldwell has poured cold water on the idea.

The WBC's super-bantamweight rankings rate Gavin McDonnell below champion Hugo Ruiz and No 1 contender Rey Vargas, so Coldwell is focusing on pursuing the world title.

Why, when you're WBC No 2, would you want to look behind you? We're looking above us.

Asked about Galahad, Coldwell told Sky Sports: "Of course he would, because Gavin is WBC No 2. But why, when you're WBC No 2, would you want to look behind you? We're looking above us.

"Galahad has been away and now he's back, so obviously he wants a quick short-cut. Let him chase somebody else.

"We're not interested in stepping back. Gavin will have an outing just to keep busy, then we're in the queue for a shot at the WBC title.

"It's the green belt - it's the WBC title - so why on Earth would we want to take a fight at domestic or European level? It's just not happening.

"I rate Galahad, he's a good kid, but Dominic can look down another avenue. I don't even know where Galahad is rated by the WBC, all we're doing is looking above us."

The unbeaten McDonnell has fought once in 2016 so far, outpointing Panama's Jorge Sanchez in February.

The WBC super-bantamweight title will next be contested in September when Ruiz travels to Japan to defend against Hozumi Hasegawa, who is currently ranked at No 5.
