David Price believes he can battle back into title contention as he starts comeback on Saturday

David Price still holds ambitions of challenging for a world heavyweight title as he attempts to revive his career this weekend.

The Liverpudlian will face Kamil Sokolowski on Saturday night in Brentwood, 10 months after a stoppage loss to Christian Hammer forced the former British champion to reconsider his future in the sport.

Price has since based himself at George Vaughan's gym in Liverpool, with Derry Mathews also taking an active role in his training, and the 34-year-old hopes to gradually work his way back into title contention.

"I'm looking forward to turning what was a bad start to the year into a good end to the year and moving into next year on a positive note," Price told Sky Sports.

"I want to make good decent steps to get back into big fights as soon as possible. Get this one out of the way and then hopefully get a 10-rounder in February time, something like that. Two or three fights, two or three wins, and I'm back in the big fights."

Price admits he has fallen short while striving to reach the top level, but believes that Manuel Charr's recent WBA 'regular' title win has shown how a heavyweight can stage a successful comeback.

"I would love to be able to say I have at least fought for a world title," said Price. "Obviously we all want to be heavyweight champion of the world, but you have to be realistic. The times when I have tried to crack world level, I've failed for whatever reason, but I'm still trying.

"If I could eventually get a shot at a world title, I would love to do that, or become a European champion. I've won British and Commonwealth titles, but I have set my targets a little bit lower to win a British title again and go from there. Just take it fight by fight and see where I end up, I suppose.

"I watched that fight and [Manuel] Charr's done well. He's come back from the brink really and if anything that's proof that you can come back.

"He's had a couple of bad defeats, bad knockout losses, and he's just kept persevering like I am, and he's got his reward in the end, so there is no reason why couldn't do something similar. It's a fight I would love to have the opportunity to take."

Tyson Fury has stirred up talk of a potential fight with Price in a social media exchange, while the Olympic bronze medallist could also consider a domestic clash with David Allen.

"The Tyson Fury one, if I can get myself back in a position where it's going to capture the public's imagination again, then yeah we would love to make that fight," said Price.

Referring to Allen he added: "If I had won my last fight, I would have been in a position to fight for a world title, so justifiably I wasn't interested in fighting Dave Allen at that stage.

"Now I'm back down at that level, then yeah it's a fight that interests me. Any fight on the British scene is a fight that interests me."
