Welsh boxer Ashley Brace will not compete at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games after the International Boxing Association deemed her ineligible due to her kick-boxing background.
The 23-year-old from Ebbw Vale was hoping to compete against England’s Nicola Adams in the 51kg category as the women's boxing event makes its debut at the Games.
But her participation in Glasgow has been scuppered because she took part at the 2013 World Kickboxing Championships in Italy, the AIBA have ruled.
Team Wales Chef de Mission Brian Davies said: "It is with great disappointment that we can confirm boxer Ashley Brace will no longer compete for Team Wales at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
"AIBA have taken the decision to refuse approval for her accreditation due to her previous involvement at the 2013 Unified Kickboxing World Championships which makes her ineligible to compete.
“The Welsh Boxing Association has contacted AIBA to clarify this decision and accepts their ruling.
"Ashley is a fantastic young athlete with bags of potential and both Welsh Boxing and the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales are saddened that she now won't have the opportunity to compete at the Games in just two weeks’ time.”
Brace's withdrawal reduces Wales’ boxing team to 10 with Lauren Price and Charlene Jones the only females competing in the women’s event at the Games.
