Danny Garcia retained his unbeaten record when he stopped Paulie Malignaggi in the ninth round of their welterweight fight at Barclays Center in New York.

Garcia improved to 31-0 with the 18th knockout of his career as he inflicted a seventh defeat in 40 fights on his fellow American.

With Malignaggi against the ropes, Garcia threw a flurry of punches before referee Arthur Mercante Jr stopped the contest at 2:22 of the ninth.

Garcia and Malignaggi traded shots almost immediately with Garcia having the better of the early exchanges, including opening cuts surrounding Malignaggi's right eye.

Malignaggi landed his best punch in the seventh, a hard right to the chin that Garcia shook off before wrapping up the win two rounds later.

On the same bill, WBA middleweight champion Danny Jacobs retained his title and improved his record to 30-1 when he stopped Sergio Mora at 2:55 of the second round.

Jacobs landed a right hook to the side of Mora's head and the challenger crumpled to the canvas before being stretchered from the ring with right ankle and knee injuries.
