Lee Selby will defend his IBF world featherweight title for the first time when he takes on former world champion Fernando Montiel on October 14.

The 28-year-old Welshman (21-1-0-KO8) snatched the crown from Evgeny Gradovich via an eighth-round stoppage in London on May 30 and has confirmed on Instagram that he will make his American debut when he takes the experienced Mexican.

Montiel has amassed a record of 54-4-2-KO39 during an impressive career which has seen him win world titles as a flyweight, super-flyweight and bantamweight.

The 36-year-old lost the last world titles he held - the WBC and WBO at bantamweight - back in February 2011 when he was emphatically stopped by Nonito Donaire.

Since then, Montiel has won 10 of his 11 fights with his only defeat coming to compatriot Victor Terrazas via unanimous decision for the vacant WBC silver super-bantamweight title on the line.

Montiel stepped up another division to featherweight in March 2014 when he narrowly beat Cristobel Cruz with a majority decision. Two more victories followed but the clash with Selby will be the first time he has fought outside Mexico since the Donaire defeat.
