England did not consider Jack Leach as a possible mid-tour replacement in India because of concerns about the legality of his action, Sky Sports understands.
It emerged only on the final day of a series England have lost, after last week's defeat in Mumbai made it 3-0 to India, that Leach was overlooked for a maiden call-up after his fellow left-arm spinner Zafar Ansari suffered a back injury.
Instead, England drafted Hampshire's Liam Dawson into their squad after the third Test at the start of this month - and he made his debut in the ongoing series finale in Chennai.
Somerset and England Lions spinner Leach, 25, took 65 wickets in last summer's Specsavers County Championship Division One campaign, only for routine testing of his action in Loughborough to indicate concerns.
