England survived a nervy four-over spell to close day three on 1-0 after being set 474 to win the second Test by South Africa.
Half-centuries from Hashim Amla (87), Dean Elgar (80) and Faf du Plessis (63) helped South Africa pile up 343-9 declared, leaving the home side needing to set a new world record chase to earn a 2-0 lead in the series.
The best effort remains West Indies's 418-7 against Australia at Antigua in 2003; in contrast the record at this ground is the 284 scored by England against New Zealand a year later.

Off-spinner Moeen Ali followed up his 10 wickets in the first Test at Lord's by taking 4-78 but wasn't called into the attack until 3pm by skipper Joe Root as South Africa piled on the runs.
Alastair Cook was given out leg before wicket to Morne Morkel off the first ball of England's second innings but reviewed successfully on a day when the home side struggled with their DRS decisions.
Cook and Keaton Jennings were both nought not out, with England's lone run on the board before the close a leg bye.
