Ballance and Rafiq extend deals with relegated county

Yorkshire began planning for a recovery mission next season as youngsters Gary Ballance and Azeem Rafiq signed two-year contract extensions on Wednesday. Relegation in the LV County Championship means 20-year-old off-spinner Rafiq and left-handed batsman Ballance, 21, will be joining the bid to scramble back out of Division Two next summer. And two-year extensions have also been offered to 20-year-old England Lions batsman Joe Root and teenage seamer Moin Ashraf.

Wainwright released

Slow left-armer David Wainwright, meanwhile, is also planning for the future. Yorkshire have several spin options, and Wainwright has therefore exercised a clause in his contract which means he can ask to be released if he is not playing regular first-team cricket. The 26-year-old played in only four first-class matches this summer.
Moxon encouraged
Yorkshire's director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon is encouraged by confirmation of Ballance and Rafiq's new deals. "We are delighted to offer contract extensions to these very talented youngsters, who have shown such promise in an otherwise disappointing season," he said. "As is the nature of the game, we have also made the very difficult decision to release three other professionals and we wish Lee (Hodgson), Ben (Sanderson) and David all the very best for the future."
