"It's been nice to be able to contribute across all areas with bat and ball and be consistent. Last year was a good year for me and I've been able to maintain that going forward so that has been the main thing for me."

Ansari, who made his ODI debut for England against Ireland in May, has taken 44 wickets in the championship but knows he has plenty of work to do in order to claim a Test place.

He said: "I've been very lucky to be able to play at the Oval where some of the pitches have helped us. I've been able to bowl a lot of overs and been able to hone my bowling which is what you have got to do as a spin bowler. So I think I can thank Gareth Batty for that as much as anyone.

"It's going to be hard to get into the team and there are a lot of guys who have been there for some time and playong well. I guess it will take some good bowling in the nets and if I get a chance in one of the warm-up matches then we will see where we go. If the opportunity comes, then great."
