Yorkshire's David Willey aims to impress England Test selectors

David Willey wants to demonstrate his Test credentials at Yorkshire this season and avoid being labelled as a limited-overs specialist.

The 26-year-old all-rounder is keen to make his mark in Division One following his move from Northamptonshire to Headingley although he was left out of the back-to-back county champions' side for their first match of the season against Hampshire.

Willey impressed with the white ball during the winter in Australia's Big Bash and at the ICC World Twenty20 where he took 10 wickets in six matches as England reached the final, but he now wants to make an impact with the red ball as well.

"I think it's becoming well known that to play Test cricket, you need to be playing and performing in Division One," he said.

"I hope, when I get the opportunity, I can perform and put my name in the hat. That's one of the reasons I've moved here - to play Division One red-ball cricket.

"I think if you're in a successful team, you're going to get recognised in that format.

"I can understand that, and I've got a long way to go in championship cricket to maybe get Test recognition - which I'm aware of.

Willey's absence from the team which opened Yorkshire's campaign with a draw at home to Hampshire confirmed to him that his role is likely to be different this season.

"You play at smaller counties - you are wheeled out at times to play every game of the season, which is difficult as a bowler," he said.

"Here, I'm going to have to push to get a game. But then also, there will be opportunities for me to rest as well.

"I hope that means that when I do play my four-day cricket, I'm fresh and can bowl to my potential.

"It's definitely a big year for me in four-day cricket, and I hope I can push for a third County Championship in a row here - and also my Test ambitions."
