Hameed admits it would be amazing to play for England on their tour of Bangladesh.

Lancashire opener Haseeb Hameed insists he is not going to Bangladesh to make up the numbers after receiving his first call-up to the England squad.

The highly-rated 19-year-old was a surprise inclusion in Alastair Cook's 17-man squad for next month's tour of the subcontinent after impressing in the County Championship this season.

Hameed is expected to challenge Northamptonshire's Ben Duckett for a starting place against Bangladesh and the youngster is relishing the opportunity to play Test cricket.

"I can't go in there just looking to gain experience, that will come anyway," said Hameed, at the Professional Cricketers' Association awards on Wednesday evening.

"The way I see it is I'm looking to get into that side for the first Test and that starting eleven. I'll have to work hard and prepare for that.

"If you're playing for your country, you should feel pressure because, at the end of the day, you've been selected from a massive group of players. To have got selected into the 17-man squad in itself is a great achievement for me.

"But I also think it's important that I see it as just the start. It's great getting the call-up but it's about going out there and putting in performances now."

Former England Test opener Marcus Trescothick has backed Hameed to impress at the top level of cricket after facing him domestically this season.

"I think he's a good player. I've played against him a couple of times this season in Somerset-Lancashire games," Trescothick said.

"He looks a fine player - good balanced all-round game against quick bowling and spin. It's a good place to go and start in Bangladesh, with all due respect to them.

"The harder challenge, when they go to India, will he get the chance to open the batting there? If he does, that will be the real test. But he's got all the attributes to go along and make something happen."
