Samit Patel took four wickets for 11 runs as Nottinghamshire beat Durham in rain-affected Royal London One Day Cup quarter-final at Trent Bridge on Tuesday.
The Outlaws held their nerve to win by 49 runs and advance to the competition's semi-finals for the third consecutive season.
Paul Collingwood won the toss for Durham and chose to bat second, knowing that weather was likely to play a part in the match at some point.
Nottinghamshire's opening partnership of Alex Hales and Riki Wessels began well, adding 55 for the first wicket before Wessels was caught off bowling of John Hastings.
Daniel Christian arrived at the crease and immediately hit Graham Onions down the ground for four first ball.
Durham's bowlers were struggling to contain the impressive Hales who reached his half century in 46 balls. The home side were handed a chance to regroup when rain intervened at 94-1, taking the teams off for a frustrating five hours.
When play finally resumed the match was reduced to 24 overs a side, leaving Hales and Christian just over six overs remaining in the innings.
Hales smashed Collingwood for six to take himself to 62 but lost his wicket the very next ball, caught at deep midwicket by Ryan Pringle.
James Taylor picked up where Hales left off, hitting 29 off 15 balls before skying a Collingwood delivery to leave the visitors 165-3.
Patel could only add one run before he was caught off the last ball of the innings, leaving Christan stranded just short of his half century on 48 not out.
Durham were set 194 to win on Duckworth-Lewis and set about chasing their target well, captain Mark Stoneman (36) and Phil Mustard (24) adding 63 before the skipper was caught by Brett Hutton off Christian.
Steven Mullaney (3-32) then dismissed Mustard with his third ball to leave the hosts faltering on 63-2.
Things got worse for the home side when Collingwood was dismissed two balls later for a first ball duck, brilliantly caught and bowled by Mullaney.
Graham Clark and Calum MacLeod attempted to rebuild the innings but Durham's hopes began to fade when Patel had Clark caught at cover for 28.
Hales then took a spectacular diving catch at square leg to get rid of MacLeod and effectively end the home side's challenge.
Durham's tail failed to wage with the final five wickets falling for just 12 runs as the home side fell 49 runs short of their target.
Nottinghamshire will now play either Surrey or Kent, who face each other at the Oval on Thursday.
