Somerset edged to a nervy one-wicket win over Surrey in the Specsavers County Championship after a 31-run last-wicket stand.

Tim Groenewald (18 not out) and Jack Leach (24 not out) saw Somerset home as they recorded their first win of the season.

The win moves Somerset up to second in the table while Surrey, for whom Gareth Batty claimed his 600th first-class wicket in match figures of 10-115, remain without a victory after seven matches.

Ben Foakes (14) cracked the third ball of the day, bowled by Leach (4-63), to cover as Surrey were skittled for 138 in their second innings, Jamie Overton (4-18) taking the final three wickets with top scorer Zafar Ansari (38) the last man to fall.

Set 301 to win, Somerset were boosted by half centuries from Marcus Trescothick (56) and Jim Allenby (56), but lost wickets at regular intervals.

Stuart Meaker (4-79) and Batty (3-83) helped reduced Somerset to 270-9, but Leach and Groenewald saw the hosts home.
