James Anderson tore his groin muscle in last week's Roses match and will be assessed by England's medical staff on Wednesday.
An initial scan revealed the tear, which happened on Friday while he was bowling for Lancashire in their County Championship game against Yorkshire.
Anderson has been ruled out of the return fixture, beginning on June 2, but the scale of the damage will not be known until further examination this week.
A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board said he "will be fully assessed on Wednesday by the ECB medical team to understand the extent of his injury."
Anderson is not in England's one-day squad for the one-day series against South Africa or the Champions Trophy.
The 34-year-old, England's leading Test wicket-taker, has until July 7 to regain his fitness in time for the summer's opening Test against South Africa.
