Virat Kohli says his man-of-the-match performance against Australia on Sunday could be the best of his career.

Kohli smashed 82 runs off 51 balls to guide India to a hard-fought six-wicket victory in Mohali, in what was effectively a knockout match.

After being set 161 to win by Australia, India looked to be struggled on 94-4 after 14 overs.

However, a 66-run stand between Kohli and Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni steered the host nation to victory with five balls remaining.

"This is what you play cricket for," Kohli said after the match.

"This innings has to be in my top three, perhaps the top right now because I'm a bit emotional.

"I don't really know what to say right now because I'm overwhelmed by the position we were in and then to take out the match.

"Me and Yuvraj strung together a good partnership and then towards the end MS [Dhoni] kept me calm - I could have gotten overexcited.

"I think it was a wonderful team batting effort and I'm very happy we crossed the line."

Australia captain Steve Smith was quick to praise Kohli, who has now scored 401 runs in just nine T20 innings against the Baggy Greens.

"That was a pretty serious innings that under pressure," said Smith.

"He just hit everything out of the middle and found the gaps. He's done it for a very long time and credit to him - he played beautifully again tonight.

"I thought that the quicks bowling into the wicket with slower balls and things like that would be hardest to hit but it turned out not to be that way.

"Virat played an unbelievable knock to get his side home."

India will now face the West Indies at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on March 31, while England play New Zealand in the other semi-final in Delhi on March 30.
