New South Africa head coach Ottis Gibson believes the side can return to the top of the world rankings after being appointed to the new role.

Ottis Gibson is confident he can steer South Africa back to the top of the Test rankings after taking over as head coach.

Gibson, who left his role as England bowling coach after the recent Test series victory over his native Windies, has replaced Russell Domingo in charge of the Proteas on a deal until the end of the 2019 World Cup.

The former seamer, who played domestic cricket in South Africa before embarking on a career in coaching, will have AB de Villiers available from early next year, with the 33-year-old confirming he will continue to play all three forms of the game.

"We've got people within the team that know what it takes to get to number one, and what we need to do now is make sure those people have still got that passion," said Gibson after being unveiled in his new job.

"I've worked with England on two occasions now and every time we've played against South Africa we've had great battles.

"One thing I've always seen is a lot of amazing talent in the country and my job is to get that talent to perform on the field."

"The most crucial thing for me is four quality fast bowlers being injured. That's a problem straight away," added Gibson.

"To win Test matches you need to take 20 wickets and having your best four fast bowlers fit and ready gives you a chance to do that.

"I don't want to get into any thinking that Bangladesh is an easy series. They're going to be tough."

South Africa's Test series against Bangladesh, with matches in Potchefstroom and Bloemfontein, is live on Sky Sports from Thursday, September 28.
