The competition has served up memorable matches over the years and Rod Harrington and Ronnie Baxter produced an enthralling final at the Winter Gardens.

Harrington was only one leg from defeat while trailing 17-14, but he forced a tie-break after Baxter missed a match dart at double 20.

With Baxter waiting on 40, Harrington took out a superb 125 checkout, and then sealed a 19-17 victory.

Harrington would repeat his title triumph the following year, defeating Peter Manley 19-17 in the final.
