Michael van Gerwen stormed through to the World Grand Prix final in Dublin where he will meet Robert Thornton on Saturday night.

The nine-time major winner crushed Mark Webster's hopes with a handsome 4-1 victory and now has the chance to lift a third title on the Emerald Isle.

"To be in the final for the second year, I think I played well at the right moments," world No 1 Van Gerwen told Sky Sports 1 HD. "This is such a hard tournament to win and I know how it is. I'm in the final against Robert Thornton and I'm really pleased with that."

The Dutch ace averaged almost 94 during his semi-final win and said: "For a couple of moments I let myself go, but I won and that's the thing that counts. I'm really pleased with the finishing - especially the 74 at the end."

And on the final against Thornton, he added: "Robert is a fantastic player. He's a fighter and never gives up. It's going to be a hard battle for me. I know how to win this title - he doesn't."

Robert Thornton was over the moon with victory against Mensur Suljovic to progress to the final

In a bruising first semi-final Thornton defeated Mensur Suljovic 4-2 to reach Saturday's final.

The former UK Open and World Masters champion fired an impressive 11 maximums and a nice 90 average to defeat the Serbian-born Austrian.

World No 28 Suljovic had already beaten James Wade, Simon Whitlock and Vincent van der Voort to reach his first televised semi-final and after take a two sets to one lead, he looked in control.

But Thornton showed plenty of fighting spirit to hit back and reach his fifth major final.

"I'm over the moon," he said. "I don't think it's sunk in. If I can get the match won then I'm happy."
