Defending champion Gary Anderson won through with a hard-fought win against Daryl Gurney

Reigning champion Gary Anderson came through a tungsten tussle against Northern Ireland's Daryl Gurney to reach the last 16 of the World Darts Championship.

'The Dude' from Derry gave Anderson a fright by taking the first set and then nailed a finish of 139 in the opening leg of the second set.

Anderson responded like a true champion with a 170 checkout in the very next leg and although Gurney missed double 16 for a two set lead, 'The Flying Scotsman' found double five to level things up.

The world No 2 narrowly missed out on two separate nine-dart attempts during the course of the contest - in the second leg of the match - and then again in the final leg of the fourth set.

Anderson broke in the deciding leg of the fifth set to deliver the knockout blow on Boxing Day.

Anderson nailed a magnificent 170 checkout during his win

Athough he finished with an impressive 99.15 three-dart average, the borders thrower admitted he will need to get back to the practice board with winner of the match between Kyle Anderson or Vincent van der Voort to come in the last 16.

"The 170 helped so it's nice when they go in. I just tried digging in but it needs to get a bit better than that," the 45-year-old told Sky Sports. "It was a struggle tonight. I though the first round was bad."

Dave Chisnall smashed in 12 maximums and averaged an outstanding 102.85 on his way to an emphatic 4-1 victory against Christian Kist.

Kist, the 2012 Lakeside champion, missed a dart at the bull to win the first set and the failed to take out tops to win the second and paid the ultimate price.

The winner of 10 PDC ranking events, Chisnall then nailed a massive 138 checkout for a break in the next for a clean sweep and although the Dutchman pulled one set back, the St Helens thrower got the job done with a delicious 97 checkout in the next.

He now faces a potential clash against Peter Wright in the next round should the Scotsman dispatch Ronny Huybrechts.

Wayne Mardle thinks Chisnall has a shot at winning the World Championship

Jamie Caven produced a clinical display of darts to destroy 'Rapid' Ricky Evans for the loss of just one leg.

The 39-year-old from Derby won 12 out of 13 legs to complete a 4-0 whitewash - averaging 91.81 - to make the third round for the first time in nine attempts.

Evans, the man who emphatically toppled Simon Whitlock in the first round, could not find his form on the oche and crumbled under the relentless pressure to head for a high speed exit at the Alexandra Palace.

Caven faces the winner of the match between James Wade or Wes Newton next.
