Ian White produced a stunning performance to defeat world number one Michael van Gerwen 6-0 to win Players Championship Five on Sunday.

White averaged 106.2 and landed four 180s as he swept past Van Gerwen to claim his fifth career title, with the pinnacle of his performance at the Barnsley Metrodrome coming with an 11-dart finish in the fifth leg.

It was also White's first victory since he picked up a Players Championship victory in Dublin in October 2015.

White eased past Ronnie Baxter (6-3), Steve Hine (6-4) and Scott Dale (6-4) to reach the last-32, before beating Jermaine Wattimena (6-4), Josh Payne (6-3) and Robbie Green (6-4) to reach the final.

He maintained his fine form against Van Gerwen, quickly claiming all six legs to dispose of the Dutchman and secure the £10,000 prize.

The victory is just the third time that White has beaten Van Gerwen, and the first time since 2012.

Van Gerwen, who defeated compatriot Benito van de Pas 6-3 in Friday's final, was hunting his ninth tournament victory of 2016 and continued his scintillating form to reach his fourth Players Championship final in succession and third of the weekend.

However, he would suffer a second successive defeat in the final after losing to Van de Pas in Saturday's decider.

On his way to the final, Van Gerwen defeated Nathan Derry (6-2), Paul Nicholson (6-4) and Kevin Painter (6-3) to reach the last-32.

Van Gerwen made light work of the in-form Daryl Gurney (6-0) before comfortably beating Keegan Brown (6-3) and Dave Chisnall (6-1) to set-up the final showdown with White.

Elsewhere, the run to the semi-finals capped a wonderful weekend for Green, having reached the same stage in Players Championship Three before losing out to Van Gerwen.

He stormed past Andy Parsons (6-3) and Mervyn King (6-0) in his opening games, before seeing off Brendan Dolan (6-5), second seed Peter Wright (6-5) and Cristo Reyes (6-5) to reach the final four, where White this time proved too strong.

Following his recent elimination from the Premier League, it was a confidence-boosting weekend for Chisnall as he reached the final four after making the quarter-finals in Players Championship Four on Saturday.
