Raymond van Barneveld displayed his superior class during an opening victory over Scott Dale at the European Darts Grand Prix in Germany.

The Dutchman, who is a five-time world champion, produced a superb 160 checkout in his 6-3 win over Dale to set up a second round match with Simon Whitlock.

With the scores locked at 2-2, Van Barneveld took out the ton-plus finish while Dale was waiting to break, and the 49-year-old reeled off the final three legs of the match in dominant fashion.

Van Barneveld must at least reach the final of this competition to keep alive his hopes of qualifying for the European Championship in October.

Brendan Dolan

Earlier in the evening, Brendan Dolan needed a last leg decider to overcome Christian Kist in their tense first round match.

Kist was left to curse his wasteful finishing after missing four match darts, allowing Dolan to book a match with Peter Wright in the next stage.

South Africa's Devon Petersen and Spaniard Cristo Reyes are also safely through after completing victories.
