Michael van Gerwen started his pursuit of more silverware with a hard-fought second round win over Darren Webster at the European Darts Grand Prix.

The world No 1 claimed the European Darts Trophy last week and took out a match-winning 138 finish to secure a 6-4 win over Webster, setting up a third round match with Steve Beaton on Sunday.

Second seed Peter Wright also cruised into the last 16 with a 6-1 victory over Brendan Dolan.

Wright's 50 per cent success rate on the doubles proved crucial against the Irishman and he will next face Joe Cullen, who easily overcame Robbie Green in a 6-1 win.

Raymond van Barneveld produced yet another trademark battling display as he won a thrilling last-leg decider against Simon Whitlock.

The Dutchman levelled at 5-5 after Whitlock missed a match dart and 'Barney' then took out a fantastic 141 finish, with the Australian waiting on a 32 checkout.

Third seed Ian White crashed out after a 6-3 defeat to James Wilson, but defending champion Kim Huybrechts, Mensur Suljovic and Michael Smith all won their second round matches.
