Michael van Gerwen won his Champions League of Darts shoot-out with Peter Wright to remain on course for his fifth title in a week.

The world number one won all three Players Championship events in Barnsley last week to go with the European Grand Prix he won in Germany last Sunday and he booked his place in the final four of the inaugural Champions League with a 10-5 win over Snakebite.

Both men recorded a win and a defeat on the opening day in Cardiff meaning the winner would move through to a semi-final with world champion Gary Anderson.

Sunday Afternoon Results

Group A Phil Taylor 10-2 Robert Thornton
Group A Michael van Gerwen 10-5 Peter Wright
Group B James Wade 10-5 Michael Smith
Group B Gary Anderson 10-5 Adrian Lewis
Sunday Evening Semi-Finals
Gary Anderson v Michael van Gerwen
Phil Taylor v James Wade

And it was Van Gerwen who put aside the disappointment of his defeat to Phil Taylor on Saturday, to sweep past Snakebite, surging into a 5-1 lead with a blistering display that left Wright playing catch-up from the outset.

With Wright improving as the men went on both men continued the assault on the treble 20, but Van Gerwen had already done the damage and closed out the afternoon session with a win that gives him every chance of revenge on Taylor.

The Power himself maintained his 100% record to book his place in the last four with a third win of the group stage.

The Power averaged over 108 in a flawless performance against current World Grand Prix champion Robert Thornton and ahead of next weekend's major in Dublin, the 16-time world champion showed signs of his very best as he sealed a spot in Sunday evening final four.

Leading 2-1, the Power hit eight perfect darts before a woeful dart at double 12 dropped into the single 9 leaving Taylor short of a magical nine-dart finish.

Taylor stormed into a 5-1 lead with an average of over 110 and there was no letting up over the second half of the match as he set up a meeting with Group B runner-up James Wade.

In Group B, Wade was joined by Gary Anderson in Sunday's final stages.

Gary Anderson 3 6 +13
James Wade 3 4 +9
Adrian Lewis 3 2 -10
Michael Smith 3 0 -12

The Machine needed a victory from his match with Michael Smith and he achieved it comfortably with a 10-5 win over the Bully Boy.

A dominant performance from Wade left Smith winless in Cardiff and meant Wade moved top of the table for a brief period.

After Wade's win the maths was simple for the second afternoon session of the group, Adrian Lewis needed to beat Gary Anderson 10-3 to send the double world champion home early despite his two wins on Saturday.

Jackpot made the fast start he needed to lead 2-0 before Anderson battled back to 2-2, however Lewis moved into a 4-2 lead and broke again for a 5-2 advantage.

But Anderson chalked up the two further legs that he needed to trail 5-4 and render the rest of the match irrelevant for Lewis and it seemed to show as the Flying Scotsman won the next six legs to wrap up match.

Darts next major gets underway next Sunday on Sky Sports when 32 of the world's best go head-to-head in one of the toughest competitions to win - the World Grand Prix is on Sky Sports 3 from 7pm on October 2.
