Peter 'Snakebite' Wright has revealed the emotion of ending his hoodoo and winning a major televised title last weekend.
Ranked No 3 in the world, top prizes had eluded Wright until he overcame Gerwyn Price 11-6 in the final of the UK Open on Saturday night. He had been beaten in the past two finals by Michael van Gerwen.
"It was a weird feeling on stage," Wright exclusively told Sky Sports. "Normally, MC John McDonald says 'and the runner-up prize goes to…'
"Then it's normally me walking up to get the runner-up prize! But I'd won.
"Finally, we've done it - me, Jo, and our family. We're always away on the road, so I've done it for them. And all the hard work that Jo puts in - doing my hair, driving me around, picking me up when I lose. It's all down to her.
"It's all about family. Our daughter and son do things behind-the-scenes, looking after the house.
"Obviously I've been expecting to win so it's good to get over the line.
"The past couple of years, my form has been there but it hasn't been consistent enough. I'm now getting more consistent, plus I'm hitting higher averages which come with practice. That's what you need to win these big tournaments."
Wright's attention will quickly shift to Thursday's Premier League Darts, live on Sky Sports, where he faces James Wade.
"I've got to concentrate on my next game on Thursday. The first job is out of the way. Onwards, upwards, and onto the next one."
Watch Premier League Darts this Thursday, from The SSE Hydro in Glasgow, live on Sky Sports 3 HD from 7pm.
