Phil Taylor or Raymond van Barneveld? Wayne Mardle makes Premier League Darts predictions

wayne mardle

Premier League Darts is bringing a classic heavyweight tussle - Phil Taylor vs Raymond van Barneveld - to Leeds on Thursday, live on Sky Sports. Wayne Mardle looks into his crystal ball...

Peter Wright v Gary Anderson

This is the kind of match Peter needs to stop losing. Gary gets the better of him far too often for Peter's liking.

World Darts Championship Quarter Final Wright Anderson

Peter hasn't looked relaxed at all. He's changed his darts yet again, and he's got to stop doing that. He can't be happy with his form.

He went through a phase of five or six months without changing but, the minute he went off the boil, he's changed his darts. That says that he's not confident and comfortable - but he should be because he's in form away from the Premier League.

Gary is a better player than Peter. Peter succumbs to Gary too easily.

Prediction: Gary annihilates Peter on a regular basis, and I can't see this being any different. Gary's average level is higher and he will ram home that advantage.

Sky Bet odds: Anderson 8/13, Draw 4/1, Wright 3/1

Adrian Lewis v James Wade

This is really hard. Wade played some really solid stuff last week - and 'solid' is enough to beat Lewis at the moment.

Wade will have to get to his usual standard of doing enough, nicking 96 and 81 finishes. Adrian is beginning to find his feet, but playing steadily against James normally gets you beat.

Prediction: A Wade win, on the premise that he sticks with Adrian in the scoring and just out-scores him.

Sky Bet odds: Lewis 11/10, Draw 7/2, Wade 13/8

Phil Taylor v Raymond van Barneveld

Both have shown enough form and composure, which is a word I haven't used for Phil recently. He hasn't had much composure but found some against James Wade last week.

Raymond van Barneveld v Phil Taylor: World Darts Championship

Raymond is looking so cool. Nothing fazes him, at the moment, even when someone hits him with everything.

It wouldn't surprise me if Raymond won but Phil is still tough to beat. With the history that these two have got - they've drawn a lot in the Premier League.

Prediction: I'd be inclined, if I was having a punt, to back a draw. I can't divide them. The last 10 or 11 meetings have been shared. I can't see either losing.

Sky Bet odds: Taylor 1/1, Draw 7/2, Van Barneveld 15/8

Anderson, Lewis & Taylor all to win, was 6/1, now 7/1 here.

Michael van Gerwen v Jelle Klaasen

I expect Van Gerwen to win, of course, but Klaasen is 10/1 and that's far too big. I'm a price-based punter and I might have a tenner on Klaasen, not because I think he'll win, but because I like the price.

Klaasen is a far better player than the first time he was in the Premier League, and now has the right mindset. Week-in, week-out, he'll turn up and try his best. If it doesn't work, nothing changes. He won't be dragged down with another defeat.

Prediction: The likeliest outcome is that both play a good game, but Michael is too good. If Klaasen plays his best game, it still might not be enough.

Sky Bet odds: Van Gerwen 1/7, Draw 9/1, Klaasen 10/1

Dave Chisnall v Kim Huybrechts

If Chizzy loses to the likes of Huybrechts, that's not the way forward.

I can see a really nervy affair. A mistake-ridden. Dave trying too hard, Kim being more steady - but does being steady against Chizzy get you anywhere?

Prediction: Huybrechts to win, purely because Chizzy looked as edgy as I've seen him in a long time last week. Playing someone he should beat is unwanted pressure for Chizzy.

Sky Bet odds: Chisnall 11/10, Draw 7/2, Huybrechts 13/8
