Fernando Alonso and McLaren hit new low after Honda engine breaks on Russian GP formation lap

Two-time world champion doesn't even make the start in Sochi

McLaren's Fernando Alonso has described his feeling of helplessness after failing to even start the Russian GP due to the latest failure of his Honda engine.

Alonso is yet to finish a race this season but suffered a new low in Sochi when his car broke down on the formation lap.

"There is nothing we can do from a driver's point of view," Alonso rued. "We drive as fast as we can, we help the team as much as we can, we prepare for the race with fitness and our engineers and then we come here and it switches off."

McLaren say Alonso's breakdown is suspected to have been caused by an ERS failure.

"It's tough, it's frustrating - every weekend is the same," added Alonso.

"You cannot hide behind a result like this," concurred team boss Eric Boullier. "I share his frustration - it's not acceptable."

The Spaniard does at least have the distraction of his imminent appearance in the Indy 500 race ahead. But the two-time world champion has stressed that no amount of success Stateside can compensate for his mounting frustration with a sport he insists is far more than his day job

He said: "It's good to have Indy in my head, and there are many other projects going on which keep my head busy, but my life is Formula 1 and my dreams are in Formula 1. We need to find a way to improve. It hurts."

McLaren are yet to score a point this term.
