Shrimpers send Sampson back

Promotion-chasing Southend have opted against extending the loan stay of Bolton striker Jack Sampson.

The 18-year-old has struggled for fitness since first joining the Shrimpers in mid-January and has not featured since the 1-0 home defeat to Aldershot in League Two on March 20. And as the season reaches its climax, Southend boss Paul Sturrock believes the teenager remains another couple of weeks away from recovering from a leg injury. "I feel Jack has two or three weeks before he is fit again, which is unfortunate," the Southend boss told the club's official website. "I think at Burton (in early March) he showed he could have been an asset but I just felt after four weeks it is an awful lot to ask someone to soldier on back down and fit in." Sampson made a total of nine appearances, five of which starts, but failed to find the net.
