Olly Lancashire has been named Rochdale's new team captain ahead of their return to League One.

Dale released Peter Cavanagh, who was skipper last season, and 25-year-old Lancashire often wore the armband in his absence. Speaking at a fans' forum, manager Keith Hill said it was an easy decision to appoint the defender: "It's a natural choice from a manager's perspective as well as the squad's perspective. "The players really relate to Oliver and they've got a lot of respect for him as a player and as a leader. "He's integral in the changing rooms, he's my type of central defender and I think it was a natural transition for him. He will be respected and appreciated, as he already is, by all the players in the squad. "We obviously have leadership qualities all over the pitch, but for me, it's a privilege to give the honour of wearing the captain's armband to Oliver Lancashire." Lancashire played 44 times in all competitions last term as Dale won automatic promotion from League Two.
