Blades boss urges board to spend in summer

Kevin Blackwell has spoken of his desire to keep midfielder Nick Montgomery at Sheffield United. Montgomery, who has been one of the Blades top performers this season, is out of contract at the end of the current season. With a frantic summer reshuffle on the cards, Blackwell is desperate for Montgomery to sign a new deal as he feels his presence will give his side some much needed continuity and authority. Blackwell told the club's website: "He has been exemplary for a long time now and that's why I want him to sign, but I need help from those who sort contracts out. "I believe that the majority of our fans now appreciate what he does for us and he has been an absolute colossus for us. "Monty is well respected in the game and there are things in his game that we need. He is a Blade through and through and if I'm honest I believe deep down that he would like to stay."

Transfer targets

Blackwell insists the club must flex their muscles in the summer if they are to remain competitive in the Championship. He told The Star: "We've got to build something, build our own squad, to be able to compete with teams like Newcastle. "To have come so far, to be in the position we have been for much of the season where we were still in with a shout is a credit to the players' application and commitment because it's not been easy for them. "All of us work hard because we want the same thing. My staff and myself always keep an eye on those who could be assets."
