Sheffield Wednesday's bid to sign striker Neil Mellor from Preston North End has fallen through.

The clubs agreed a fee for Mellor on Friday but have not managed to sort personal terms with the former Liverpool striker. The 28-year-old scored 20 goals while on loan with Wednesday last term but he now looks set to return to Deepdale for pre-season training. Preston chairman Maurice Lindsay told the Lancashire Evening Post: "The position is that Sheffield Wednesday have failed to agree terms with the player and at this stage he will be coming back at the end of June to Preston."
