Injury ends Howe's season

Newport have confirmed striker Rene Howe will undergo surgery on a thigh injury, which could see him miss the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old picked up the problem midweek and, following assessment, results show he will require an operation. While the club did not disclose the length of Howe's absence, last week Justin Edinburgh confirmed it was likely to end his season. "It looks like Rene's season is over which is a real big blow to us," Edinburgh told BBC Radio Wales. "When we do get an injury, we seem to get a major one so it's a huge disappointment for the lad and the football club. "He'll need surgery and once he's had that operation we'll know a little bit more. "It's going to be a fair while before Rene's back in action." Howe had played in all four of Newport's opening matches of the new campaign, after good form in pre-season, before rupturing his thigh muscle in midweek and has made 19 appearances for the club since joining from Burton in January. Edinburgh conceded he may be forced back into the transfer market to look for a replacement for Howe.
