York City have completed the signing of defender Dave Winfield on a free transfer.

The 26-year-old centre-back has signed a two-year deal with the Minstermen following his release from Shrewsbury earlier this month. Winfield made 17 league appearances for the Shrews last season and now becomes York's sixth summer signing. "I'm very excited about this new chapter of my career. It would be great to come here and achieve something," Winfield told the club's official website. Boss Nigel Worthington added: "David is another experienced centre-half to add to the three that we've already got. Again, he's played a lot of his football in League One so he's had a wealth of games and has a wealth of experience to add to what we've got. He will also add competition for places and that's what we're all about."
