Simon Grayson saw Josh Brownhill's free-kick practice pay off after the midfielder's 35-yard effort gave Preston a 2-1 win over Burnley.
Midfielder Brownhill, who scored just three times last season, continued his pre-season purple patch, with his fourth goal of the summer the best of the lot. North End had to come from behind against their Premier League opponents, though, after Lukas Jutkiewicz had fired the Clarets into a 16th-minute lead when Australia international Bailey Wright dithered on the ball on the edge of his own area. Alan Browne levelled with a deflected finish past Matt Gilks six minutes after the break before Brownhill decided the contest in emphatic fashion a minute from time. After Kevin Davies had been fouled, former Manchester United trainee Brownhill unleashed a rocket into the top corner which left Gilks with no chance. It was a finish which his manager admits he did not know Brownhill was capable of based on his training-ground practice. "He's been working on them for the last year or so and he's never hit the target once in training or in a game," joked Grayson. "We've been having a lot of laughing and joking with him over the last few weeks and months. He hits a few and they are sailing over by yards and metres and we keep sending him in early. "But he's hit one that has absolutely flown in that top corner and the lad's playing with a lot of confidence. For him to hit it in the first place shows what confidence he's playing with at the moment."
