Brighton & Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet has handed midfielder Jamie Smith a new six-month contract.

The former Crystal Palace youngster made 12 appearances this season but missed the promotion run-in after suffering a metatarsal injury in January. Poyet has given Smith the chance to prove himself in the Championship and earn a long-term contract. Back-up goalkeeper Michael Poke has agreed a new one-year deal while Poyet has also offered contracts to youngsters Yaser Kasim, Ryan Simmonds and Steve Cook. But fellow youth-teamers Ryan Thomson and James Smith have been released and rookie keeper Mitch Walker, who has a year left on his contract, has been told he is free to leave.
