Chesterfield have signed former Doncaster defender Sam Hird on a two-year deal.

The 24-year-old centre-half made 34 appearances for Rovers in the npower Championship last season, but was released from the Keepmoat following their relegation. But he has been snapped up by Spireites manager John Sheridan and will stay at the B2net Stadium until 2014. Sheridan told the club's official website: "I am delighted that we have been able to agree a two-year deal with Sam Hird. "He is the type of player who will bring experience and leadership qualities to the squad."
