Johnson backing for Montano

Lee Johnson believes Cristian Montano can have a successful Oldham career if he learns to consistently make the right choices.

The former West Ham trainee, 21, has been plagued by injuries during his time at Boundary Park but has shown glimpses of his quality such as his sumptuous solo goal in Latics' first game of the season against Stevenage. Johnson knows that after seeing that strike, a 70-yard run which was finished off with a deft chip, Montano has the capabilities of being a match-winner. Now, with Montano having returned to full fitness following an operation to have a cyst drained, Johnson has challenged the winger to be more intelligent in attacking areas. "The decision making is something with Cristian that is hot and cold," he said. "We're trying to improve that. It's not easy to improve that. He's got world-class athleticism, if you like, but decision making can be the difference between the levels when you look at the top players. "I was at Man City the other night and the decision making of their players in and around the box is just exceptional and that's why they're world class. "Physically there's not much difference between (David) Silva and Montano but it's the decision making in those areas and the quality. "Cristian has got an awful lot of quality and if he can get that decision making he can have a great career."
