Chairman Paul Wildes believes Port Vale have issued a signal of intent with their transfer activity during the first week of January.

Vale have bolstered their promotion-chasing squad with the acquisition of experienced duo Darren Purse and Lee Hughes, as well as bringing former Vale Park favourite Chris Birchall back to Burslem. Following the arrival of 36-year-old striker Hughes on Tuesday, Wildes told the club's official website: "I believe that the signing of a quality player like Lee, along with our other acquisitions, signals our intent that we want to return Port Vale to better times. "We are pleased to support (manager) Micky (Adams) in strengthening his squad and will continue to work closely with him for the remainder of January and beyond. "Our ambition is not just driven by the short term, we want the manager to assemble a strong squad which he feels will serve us well for the future."
