Yates: We showed determination

Cheltenham boss Mark Yates praised his side's character as they bounced back from a heavy defeat at Rochdale to beat Wycombe 4-0 on Boxing Day.

The Robins were put to the sword 4-1 at Rochdale on Friday night but responded superbly to dispose of Wanderers at Whaddon Road - Jake Taylor, Jeff Goulding, Darryl Duffy and Jermaine McGlashan getting on the scoresheet. "It was a case of the boys putting right what was very evidently wrong on Friday night," Yates said. "We've had a tough couple of days since then but the boys have responded in the right way, as I knew they would. As bad as we were on Friday, we were good here." Cheltenham's promotion push was back on track courtesy of what is their biggest win of the season so far. And Yates singled out midfielder Russ Penn for praise as he led Cheltenham forward from the centre of the pitch. "Russ epitomised what I want from my team with his performance," Yates said. "We showed grit and determination and what it takes to win matches. On Friday we looked like we thought we just could turn up and win matches. "We gifted Rochdale chances and didn't heed the warnings, carrying on in the same lethargic manner. "But against Wycombe we showed aggression, tempo and more pressing in the opening two minutes than we did in 95 minutes at Rochdale. That's pleasing and when we play on the front foot and like we did here we look a half decent side. "As long as we perform with same energy and purpose, we'll be fine."
