Wright: We were excellent

Chesterfield assistant boss Tommy Wright was pleased with the way his players performed against promotion-chasing Port Vale.

Second-placed Vale took an early lead at the Proact Stadium only to fall behind to goals from former striker Marc Richards, with the Spireites heading for victory until Tom Pope grabbed his 31st goal of the campaign five minutes from time to secure a 2-2 draw. "I thought against a team who are going for promotion we were excellent," Wright said. "We controlled the game for large periods and passed the ball well. We forced Port Vale into changing their system. "He (Marc Richards) has not scored as many goals as people would have liked but no-one on the coaching staff doubts what a good player he is. He's one of the top strikers in this division and hopefully next season he will score even more goals. "The only thing that disappointed me was the last 20 minutes when I thought we could have counter-attacked better and kept the ball better. When you lose the ball against a team like Port Vale you know it's going to come back in your box so we could have kept possession better."
