Edwards sticks with Spireites

Teenage Blackburn defender Ryan Edwards has had his loan spell at Chesterfield extended by a further two months.

The 19-year-old joined the Spireites in July on an initial one-month deal but his performance in pre-season and on the opening day of the League Two campaign against Bury on Saturday have led to Blues boss Paul Cook prolonging his stay at the Proact Stadium. "He's deserves it. He's a young player who will make mistakes but the games he's been involved in he's been outstanding," Cook told reporters ahead of his side's Capital One Cup tie at Leeds on Wednesday night. Edwards partnered Sam Hird at the centre of defence for the 2-0 win at Bury and the pair are in line to continue their roles at Elland Road with Ian Evatt and Liam Cooper still short of match fitness. Meanwhile, Cook confirmed that Hamza Bencherif has left the club. The midfielder, a free agent after being released by Notts County this summer, had been on trial with the Spireites.
