Walton: Don't write us off

Hartlepool midfielder Simon Walton has not written off the club's chances of avoiding relegation this season.

Walton, 25, has not enjoyed the best of seasons after joining Pools in the summer following his release by Plymouth Argyle, but turned in a man-of-the-match display in Saturday's home win over Notts County. Victory ensured a first home win for League One's bottom club since September 1, a first home win for manager John Hughes and Pools' first back-to-back wins since September 2011. Walton, who has struggled to win over the fans at Victoria Park, told the club's official website: "That reception meant a lot to me. "At the start of the season I wanted to make a massive impression, as I think everyone does when they come to a new club, but it went in the opposite direction really. "After Saturday, I'll give myself a little pat on the back maybe, but I'm not one to get carried away. "There's a lot of work to be done for me to get back to where I should be and where I know I can be and I think that applies to the team as well. "It's up to me to get my head down and have a real go at turning it around. "There's a long way to go, but keeping us in this division will play a massive part in that."
